...when you work from home.
There are so many benefits to working from home. You can keep your overhead costs low, and you have no commute in traffic! But, there are some challenges to having a home office or studio. One of those challenges is being productive when there are so many distractions at your home...like the bed and a TV with Netflix. The mornings can be especially hard, so today I'm sharing five tips to make your morning more productive.
Pick a consistent “wake up time”
When you don’t have to be at an office by a certain time (or have a boss watching your every move), you might be tempted to stay up all night and not wake up until 11am the next day. Over time, that can take a toll on you and end up making you feel like you’ve missed half of the day before you even start working. Pick a consistent time to wake up every morning. I wake up at 7:30am. And, don’t hit the snooze button…just wake up.
Breathe, meditate or exercise
A good way to get your body awake and ready for the day is do exercise, meditate or even do some yoga. You’ll feel better and happy that you got a work out in for the day. If you don’t have time or don’t like to work out until later in the day (like me), then take a few deep cleansing breaths before you get out of the bed. Just that little mental reset will get your mind and body ready to start the day.
Have a morning routine
Sometimes working from home can make you feel like a little kid on the weekend…you go sit on the couch in your pjs and eat cereal from a box while you binge watch Netflix. (Been there, done that!) But, the best idea to keep you focused in the morning is to give yourself a little routine to start your day. It can be as simple as brushing your teeth, washing your face, and then going to make coffee. Chances are that if you keep that routine, it will kick start you into work mode.
You’ve heard everyone say it…breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But, when your office is 10 feet from your bedroom, it is just so easy get to work and think you’ll eat breakfast later. Next thing you know, 11am rolls around, you haven’t eaten, have a headache, are starving and eat a bag of Cheetos. Yep, we’ve all done it. So, if you just eat breakfast – even if it’s yogurt or a bowl of cereal – you’ll have a better start to the day and be more productive for the whole day.
Stay off social media until you “start work”
A lot of us charge our cell phones next to our beds at night when we sleep. When you wake up, your first instinct is to pick up that phone and start spinning through your Instagram feed. I typically don’t start looking at social media until after the first cup of coffee is in my hands and I’m up and ready to start the day. If I picked up that phone in bed, I’d spend at least a 1/2 hour in bed looking at my feed, instead of getting a jump on the day.
