Do you remember a few months back when I talked about driving around and passing poorly designed logos on the interstate? I often look at logos when I’m out and about and consider that some of those logos may have been the jumping off or starting point for a small business with no budget, or created 50 years ago.
Let’s be honest, every business has to start somewhere - usually it’s a dream plus a whole lot of work that eventually allows you to do the thing that you are most passionate about. But, most businesses don’t start out with a never ending money tree and we know that starting a business comes with a fair bit of expense.
When I see these poorly "designed" logos, that were undoubtedly "designed" by a wife, a friend, a piece of clip art or an assortment of fonts tossed together in Word, I do wonder if it just "wasn’t in the budget" to procure an actual graphic designer to help create a professional brand for their business. So, they went with what they could put together at the time.
Once that business is rolling along, isn’t it time to take a look at your branding and consider if a “brand refresh” wouldn’t help boost your business and your clientele? There is nothing worse than having an "identity crisis" and sometimes you don’t even know that you are having one!
There are a few indicators that it is time for a rebranding for your business, and here are four:
Your brand lacks quality.
This one is pretty self explanatory….if you threw your ‘logo’ together in Word, it’s time for a new professionally designed brand. If you have a mediocre logo/branding visual, the honest truth is that there are definitely people that won’t give your business a second thought.
You old branding it outdated.
There are some companies that have been around for a long time…and with that there can be the possibility of an outdated logo. Whether it is the style, the font, the graphics, a rebranding can incorporate some of the important identifying elements of an existing logo. A rebrand can give your logo a fresh, updated look that will garner the attention of a new audience, as well as impress your existing clientele.
Your original business vision has evolved over time.
Business plans change and evolve over time. In actuality, it is a pretty common occurrence. Growth is typically a good thing, so keep moving forward toward the greatness and make sure that your branding reflects that. Changes with your business may include a desire to target a new market. Sometimes as your business evolves and grows, your target market changes and your logo should be reflective of the audience you are aiming for. This is the perfect time to get yourself a fresh new branding package that reflects all of that.
You feel uncomfortable with your logo.
Do you avoid handing out your your business card? Don’t use your logo on everything you do? These are signs that can manifest from a dislike or embarrassment of your branding. You should NEVER feel embarrassed by your branding!
